Sticking in 4 wheel drive

This is my first time posting on therangerstation. However, I've been lurking for a couple of years. Everytime something breaks on my truck, this is the first place that I come.

I have a 2000 ranger with 135,000 miles on. It has the vacuum auto 4x4. Recently, it has been staying engaged in 4x4 after I turn it back to 2 wheel drive (the light goes out, but you can tell it's still engaged). If I pull over and put it in reverse and back up a few times, it'll kick out. Yesterday when it kicked out of 4x4, it made a pretty loud clunk.

Could that be a symptom of the hubs being bad, or could it be the transfer case? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks in advance

idk man, thats a live axle setup in that truck if im not mistaken, so there are no hubs persay, most rangers in the past ive had to back up to take them out of 4wd.....my experience is limited to older rangers but id imagine itd be no different on a newer truck

2000s still have PVH on the Rangers. 2001 started the live axle. Explorers were live axle from 98 up.

That sounds like a bit of driveline wind up to me. How are your tires wearing? Are they close to the same tread depth, or are they different by more than a few 32nds? Have you been driving on hard surfaces with the 4x4 engaged?
