Starts But Won't Stay Running

i would check your manometer first.

Many ideas.

First and foremost. The idea that we are telepathic is wrong !

More info please.

Is there a CEL light?

Is the fuel pump working?

Vacuum. is there a leak?

IAC solenoid. Is it working?

Whats the fuel pressure?

Sorry for being so vague in my initial description. I can't find any noticable vacuum leaks. I did the Key On Engine Off diagnostic scan with a jumper wire and got a "1 5 4 2 5 4 2" code, whatever that means. A friend came over with his Snap-On diagnostic scanner and didn't pull any codes. He said if the fuel pump was bad, it wouldn't throw a code.

So, I'm assuming my fuel pump is bad. I replaced the original pump @3 years ago with an aftermarket (I believe Airtex) unit. At that time, I pulled the tank, got new straps and had a devil of a time getting it all back up in there, including the main wiring plug for the sending unit. I want to do it right this time. I've heard only use an OEM Motorcraft pump/sending unit and just pull the bed this time. I also have a split in the fuel filler neck and want to take care of this issue as well. I'm finding these are expensive ($190-$250) if you get an OEM one, but found an aftermarket one on eBay for $34. Am I dumb for getting the aftermarket one?

My bolts holding the bed are original and I'm assuming I'm going to break some/all of them getting them off. Just get new grade 8 hardware to replace the factory hardware? I'm assuming the dealer wants a mint for these bolts.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! This truck has served me well, but it's time for me to return the love. I ordered it brand new in 1993 and she's got just shy of 200,000 on the odometer. Thanks, in advance, for any assistance!

just a heads up all you have to do to check the fuel pump is turn the key to the on position and listen for the pump to prime the system. if you can hear the pump run the next thing you should check is the mass air flow sensor. that is what it was on mine. to see if it is the problem just unplug it. if it starts and runs viola thats the problem. run and grab some mafs cleaner or a new sensor. you need security torx bit to get it out though.

that not true at all. you need to do a fuel pressure test to know if you have adaquate fuel pressure, also pull the vacuum line off of the fuel pressure regulator and make sure there is no gas in it. clean your maf, iacv and Tb those are maintance issue anyways. CHANGE YOUR FUEL FILTER.......REPORT BACK WITH YOUR RESULTS. make sure your air filter and air intake duct are clean.

You can get the testers from the parts stores for free or you can buy one at harbor frieght for $20..............a fuel filter is $8 and crc maf cleaner is $6

you are reading the codes wrong there is a longer space betweeen the individual codes

vacuum guage. If you can pull the codes

lol thanks I had googled it and saw pressure reading device.......I thought maybe it was some urban slang for "grow a backbone" or something and that i was not understanding it..

Thanks for the info! The truck died at a friend's house and I haven't gotten out there this week to start the process rolling. I'll keep the updates coming when I get rolling.

OK, an update. I got the bed off yesterday only to discover the spring hangers barely holding the leaf springs to the truck. Also broke a few of the bed bolts, but they did all spin off after 17 years. Not too bad. Where's the best place to get spring hangers and bed bolts?

Your local parts house should have them.. OR go to eBay and anyone selling ranger used parts from the SOUTH should be able to ship hard to get parts to you, even if they don't have the parts you need listed ASK for them! I say SOUTH so you will get un-salted parts!

these forums work best when the Op gives plenty of FEEDBACK :icon_confused: about the truck. There are 2 mains reasons why I believe this. 1) it helps us in the process of helping you with your truck FOR FREE. 2) any future members that might be having a similar issue and read this thread.

ps. I changed the hangers and shackles on my truck and I removed my bed to do it ;)
