i just put a new 2.9 in my 87 ranger and it wont start. it tries to turn over but the engine rotates about 1/8 of the way around and then the battery dies. i even tried to rotate the engine with a rachet and its impossible so does anyone have an idea ?

You're rotating it and it's getting "stuck" or frozen? Have you tried to remove the spark plugs and turn it over by hand (w/ a ratchet)?

Or are you physially trying to start the motor with a ratchet (then yes, it isn't likely you'd ever get it started that way on a new install).

If it's getting stuck, something's not right (but I don't know how dead the battery is and I don't know what kind of force you're putting on it with the ratchet with the plugs in). I'd recommend not trying to start it w/ starter until you figure out what it's getting caught on so nothing can get ruined. And yes, it may come down to pulling the engine off the trans and seeing if it rotates without drive train attached.

What trans do you have, stick or auto?

when i turn the key it rotates and stops but i cant do it with a rachet even with the plugs out and i looked in the cylenders and nothings there and it drains the batteries after a few seconds and the starter gets really hot

its a auto..... if its not aligend right would that be it

check the voltages at the starter and make sure you have e enough power to the starter. also make sure the positive cable to the starter is not grounding out on anything

If you can't turn it over with a ratchet and with the plugs out, something is binding up. I read in another one of your posts on another forum that you hear the engine run before you bought it. I can't think of anything off hand that could have changed..

What, if anything was done with the torque converter for the auto trans? If it falls out, it needs to be clicked or popped back into place... Also verify that the bell is completely against the trans (maybe some wires are smashed?). Flex plate and everything installed as it was?

check to make sure the nose cone on the starter did not break off and get jammed some how.
