A potential starting problem has popped up on my 1997 Ranger, 3L engine, 2W automatic.. At times when the key is turned on the starter does not engage but makes a noise as if the starter is trying to engage. This noise is only made one time and then nothing. If the key is turned off and immediately turned on again the engine will start. Sometimes when the key is turned on there is no sound at all. Turn it off and on again the starter engages. Any info will be appreciated.

Original starter?
If so, I'd guess the brushes are short.
Pretty soon you'll have to tap on it.
Or, replace it.
