had new starter for about a month. gradually got to where it grinds on the flywheel again. checked flywheel and all teeth are good. as far as i know doesn't have a support bracket just has two bolts to tighten it to flywheel. as far as i know the flywheel is for manual trans. but according to autozone it doesn't make a difference for 86 model and doesn't require shims but the starter usually lasts about a month..thought maybe it needed a brace for the front of starter or shims. any help would be great.....

neighbor has 85 model and has no brace on front of starter and no shims. just wondering if maybe flywheel is for auto trans instead of manual but this was the one on the truck when i got it. i just swapped motors to an 89 motor with auto trans, so i used flywheel off original motor and took off auto flywheel

Don't know about the auto/ manual difference, but I had a problem with my starter grinding on the flywheel before. I pulled the starter & found one of the mount holes in the starter itself had somehow been wallowed out some, this was letting the starter move a little due to the hole being bigger than the bolt, I just used a slightly bigger bolt that fit the hole, & drilled & tapped the threads to accept it, problem solved.

May or may not be your problem, just a thought.

had samething happen already tapped new hole for bolt. lasted a week now sittin in driveway and starter just spins. wonder why the parts store sells same starter regardless if its man or auto, but sell different flywheels based on trans type....this is gettin old....

Have you tried to put it in gear & rock the truck back & forth a little, then try to start it? Had a toyota that worked on, it had a bad spot on the flywheel.

I don't know much about this stuff, just sharing experiences. :dntknw:

Yeah, could be bad spot on the flywheel.

Also, do you have the thin plate between the motor and trans in there? That's what positions the starter in the right spot, if it's not there, you will have this issue. I did.

If the starter just spins without trying to engage, the starter is shot... the joy of a rebuilt unit is the several you go thru before you finally get a good one.

They sell different flywheels because you need a flywheel for a manual trans and a flex plate for an automatic.

Teeth missing from the flywheel will cause your starter to spin and so will a broken starter. Check to make sure the teeth on the flywheel line up with the ones on the starter, otherwise, have them warranty it as many times as it takes to get a good part.

Not to sound stupid but just started working on this bronco ii, think i have starter issue resolved, just bought a new flywheel and put it on, so far so good...next question, any help would be good. manual trans shifter is very loose, took it off and the white looking ring that surrounds the shift lever is wore out. what is that called and can u get it separately?

It shifts into all gears fine and stays in gear 1st through
reverse but shift lever has A LOT of play in it. Just thought the ring that is wore out could be found at a local parts store or does the whole thing have to be bought??

I had one wear out before, but I had another shifter that had a good one, so I just changed shifters. I have never had to try to find one & don't exactly know what it's called. You don't sound stupid man, I have had mine for 15 yrs & I can't answer your question. :icon_confused: You never know unless you ask!:icon_bounceblue:

I am sure somebody on here knows & I would like to know myself for future reference.

Good luck!! :icon_thumby:

I think it's called a shifter bushing, or shifter retainer cup. I dunno, mine is REALLY worn out, or at least the plastic glob on the very end of the shifter is. I'm assuming you have an FM145, same as me...same problem, seems to be real common. Can't wait to get my NP435 in.

search for shifter bushings on ebay, shouldn't be real hard to find one. I bought and installed one fairly recently.

I'm having a problem with my starter where it continues to make a grinding noise like it's engaged for about 1.5-2 seconds after I let go of the key. I thought it was a shim issue but I shimmed it and it didn't fix the problem. Now I think I have a starter that's sticking with the gear out instead of pulling back in immediately. What sucks is I got it cheap on ebay so the 1 year warranty doesn't mean much, because I'm gonna have to deal with some random business on the internet, shipping stuff around, etc.

It's the "cups" mentioned before. Had the same deal with mine, I wad difficult to find gear slots. Pretty easy to fix. You will need two, Just get two top ones, parts places will charge a lot more for the bottom one, but just buy two and flip one around.

hey you said you got yours at a parts house, well i'm not having any luck with autozone. where did u get yours from, we may have one here where i live.
