well i thought i had the smaller starter but i guess its the big one, is there a really small starter i can buy new or junkyard that would fit with a c-6 and the headman headers? the big one dont fit :icon_twisted:

I am using a 351W and C-6 combo. I used a starter from a 90's F-150 5.0 W/AOD tranny.

I am not using headman headers though.

3.8 thunderbirds have the mini starter that is supposed to work with the 5.0

Just count the teeth on your starter and make sure the mini starter has the same amount of teeth, I bought one off ebay for about $56 bucks starter worked great just had the wrong amount of teeth and chewed up the cog... now i'm back with the big ol' original starter, I picked one up for $30 out of an old 198X lincoln. good luck

Thats one thing i like bout the old dodges(yea i'm an old school dodge fan too) You can get a dodge dakota starter and put it in the full size(at least the 80s models anyways) and it works the exact same.Had to do this on my old 84 dodge ram, had dynomax headers and the starter was huge and i didnt wanna remove the header to take the damn starter out, so i bought the dakota starter. Bad thing was, they wouldnt take my old starter back for a core because it wasnt a dakota starter.

right on guys thanks for your info just a thought i was down on the ground looking at the header and tranny:icon_twisted: and i just wanted to check but i grabed the 4.0 starter i had put it in the hole and everything lined up i think it even had the same amount of teeth on the other starter i had i could be wrong i did this kinda fast cuase i was in a hurry buuutt even if it was the same amount of theeth and what not would if be strong enough to spin the 5.0? also kinda off the topic but when i orderd the oil relcate deals i dont think i got the kit cause im missing the hoes and nipples and such is there a part number for just that stuff thanks for your help:icon_thumby:

if the smaller starter has trouble cranking the 5.0, cheat and set the timing a couple degrees lower to see if it cranks faster............ (example: normally 12*BTDC/reset it to 10*BTDC). BUT, wait for more replies on the subject to be sure........

that's a much better choice of words than some people in La. use--gotcha on waiting....good idea:headbang:
