Got a 85 ranger 5spd, 2.8, 4x4, jus got it..first didn't have power to truck at all...got it fig. Out. Starter relay was wired wrong. Now it will crank a sec. Then it makes a loud clank. Has brand new starter. TTook the starter out teeth look good. The teeth on flywheel look okk all the way around???? Tried shimming starter but to no avail.

Probably a stupid question but have you turned over the engine by hand? Ensure you have full rotation?
Take starter to autoparts store to be tested.. I have gotten more bad parts new of the shelf these past few years than ever before

I took the starter out and a couple plugs, turned the engine by hand.
Seems to to fine. Flywheel doesn't look bad all the way around??
It cranks a turn or 2 then u hear the big "clank" sound. Turns some more then "clank"
Starter seems like it is draggin and it real slow..
Gonna take starter and battery to autozone tomorrow and have em checked out.

Broken rod, connecting rod, piston, etc inside the engine possibly causing the engine to turn over until one of those broken parts jams it up again.

Well the 2.8 used that giant timing gear so I doubt the valve would be hitting pistons.
Not even sure if the 2.8l is an interference engine.

I would pop out all the plugs and check compression on each cylinder, even if its only using your finger over the spark plug hole to see if there IS compression on all 6 cylinders.
No compression on a cylinder means busted rod/piston or....

I will check compression...the motor turns freely all the way around with starter out
I had autozone test starter. Passed 3 times. Flywheel looked fine other than teeth wore alittle

If it was fuel injected I would say fuel regulator and hyrdoing on the rear two cyl.

Sounds like the timing is off and it's firing to soon.

Dropped the oil pan some. Everything looked ok from what I could see..
Maybe check the timing next and see where its at. Thanks for all ur input guys

pulled the trans. Today. Didn't see anything out of the ordinary
Put back in forgot the plate between motor and trans...fig. what the hell try it anyways
Starter still dragged but didn't hear the clank?? What's that plate called so I can look into maybe gettin a new one

The local yard I deal with calls it the engine spacer to transmission plate. And no I'm not being a smart arse...that's what they called it. LOL.

Yeah, it's kinda important....

Well umm, I just had a similar experience with a starter in my bronco 2, the starter didn't have a shim in it, and well it was hitting completely past the flywheel jamming everything up. Guessing the previous owner's fix to that was to take the flywheel loose yeah that didn't fix the problem at all, only complicated everything on my end after purchasing the vehicle.

Check your starter it may just need a shim to work properly and cure your problem. Sometimes a simple $4-10 fix is overlooked in desperation of trying to fix the problem LOL...ask me how I know.

Still fn with this damn thing..got me to the point to bout give up.
Tried a min ago and let the starter get to where it makes the clank noise.
Got under the truck and looked the bendix is stuck in the out posistion against the flywheel.
Kinda looks like its not even sittin to where it would go in between the teeth of the flywheel.
Like its jus barely catchin in the teeth and riding on the outside of flywheel teeth.
To me looks like the starter needs to set in closer torward the flywheel.
