Starter problems M5ODR2 paired with 1976 302 Windsor

I’m getting close to finishing up on putting a 302 in my 1991 ranger. I paired it up with a M5ODR2 trans. I’m having problems with the starter staying hung up on the flywheel. Can I just shim the starter to get it to disengage enough? Or is there a certain starter that needs to be used?

Did you use a separator plate between the engine and trans?

If so what from?

This is the plate that I used. I bought it from the same guy I got the transmission from. He was an older man with tons of old mustangs and I believe he said the spacer plate came off of one of his other 302 engines if I remember correctly.

They are not all the same, you need one from a 302/351W with a M5OD...
