I have went through 3 starters now on my 1990 2.9 Ranger. Everytime the starter mounts snap. It starts fine for probably around 100 times and then its starts making a noise that constantly gets worse with every start and eventually the mounts break. I need to get to work tomorrow so help with this would be great!

New clutch, flywheel, pilot bearing.
Exhaust has plenty of leaks by the way

Either your buying really crap starters, or something is locked up putting to much strain on the starters.

I did this fix with a blade adapter on my mower when I couldn't find the right one. I mowed with it for 5 yrs before I replaced it last summer. Get enough thin flat stock, wide enough to peen over the outside. Pick a spot on the housing where you can drill a 1/8 hole 1/4" deep. . so you can use a 1/4 steel pop rivet. Set one rivet and work around the perimeter every inch or so.. Peen the face over as you go to give it some strength. tap the stock with the hammer to keep it tight to the housing. Alternate rivets on the space. You may have a flywheel with a different size or tooth count on the ring gear.
Or your starters have a different count on the gear. Also, on some engines the starter depends on whether it is a std or auto.trans. Did this happen after the new fly wheel?

Yep, yur teeth are different or they are correct and a spacer is missing...do the flywheel or dead starter teeth look eaten up? If not, something is binding as others pointed out.

It sounds to me like the starter is for some reason not sitting in the right place. The mounting ears should be sitting flat against the plate, if not is will stress the ears until they break. If you hold the starter in place by hand, the ears should be touching the the plate with no space, if you have a space, even a very small one, there is a problem somewhere.
