starter heat soak

Is heat soak a common issue on the 2.9 engines? I have noticed recently that I can start my truck over and over again, as long as it does not come up to temp. If I'm out driving long enough for it to warm up, after shutting it off, it will rarely spin over enough to start the engine. After it cools off again, it will fire right back up. One member (in a gen. forum search) mentioned oil on the starter helping heat soak. While I'm not sure how this would be so, has anyone else had this problem? Am I missing some sort of starter or exhaust mounted heat shield?

On the warm/hot starting....Does it roll over really hard like almost dead battery??

when it does start... is it puffing black out the tailpipe??? any odd clouds out tailpipe on start??

starter needs to be cool as well...if it is caked with oil, dirt and grit it could prevent from air flow around the housing. Could be that the bushings in the starter are getting worn.

Also...recheck your timing

On a warm/hot start situation...try turning your key on and off a couple of times prior to starting, this may help the engine computer recognize the warm/hot start condition & change timing accordingly for easyier start.??

Sorry, shoulda mentioned, this IS a new (~1 mo old ) starter with a good battery. No puffs of smoke etc, it does act like the battery is dead. The timing is also dead on. There is some oil on it from those dang leaky valve covers, but nothing so much as caked on yet.

The old starter would give similar symptoms...but all the time, not just when the engine was hot, often cold it would act just as bad. The end bushings were super whipped out, the whole shaft could move over 1/8" off center.

hmm, thats kinda weird.

im thinking maybe you got a bad starter (was it reman. or NEW?). id have my battery and charging system checked just in case. but if they are OK, id return that starter.

It was from Advance, not Ford, so there's a very good possibility it was a reman. It's only two bolts to get it off, so maybe I'll try taking it back for a swap. I thought maybe other people would have had this problem, but if mine is a case by itself, maybe I did get another bad starter. The battery is good and the charging system is good enough to run the truck w/out the battery. I'll take it back this weekend and see how that goes. Thanks!

You probably want to check your engine's ground connection while you're at it.

I have also been going through fixing elect. problems (cleaning connectors, grounds etc). Would that make any difference between hot and cold starting?

If I remember anything from how electricity works I do believe higher temps=more resistance. I never had any heat soak problems with my 2.9, I did go though a couple used starters and bad connections though.
