Will the starter from a '92 F150 fit my '92 ranger 4x4 with M5OD? The part numbers on Rockauto are 1 consecutive number different, so I'm hoping so. Reason I ask instead of just buying a new ranger starter, is my buddy has a pile of old F150's sitting around.

No the F150 starter is on the right side of block & the 2.9 is left side.

ah, too bad. they look similar in the parts lookup photos. What about using the solenoid? THat's the only part of it I need...

what engine is in your 92? if it's a 2.9 and it needs a solenoid then the starter has nothing to do with it, the starter relay (which I have heard refererred to as a solenoid) is fender mounted.

yes, it's the '92 2.9L. If there's no solenoid on the starter, what's the smaller cylendar that pulls on the linkage on the starter?

It is magnetic i think, and kicks down to push the drive out when starter is engaged
