I have a 1984 ranger, I have been having starter troubles since i bought a tranny from a junk yard. So far I have replaced ring gear, solenoid, starter, battery, and drilled starter holes for helicoils. I still have the same problems. Sometimes it grinds, sometimes it turns over then grinds, sometimes it starts, sometimes it turns over and grinds. Not sure what to do next. I did the research the tranny is from an 1984 bronco 2, a toyo koyo, checked with local ford dealer all the parts for ranger and bronco of that year are the same and should work. Any help would be great. Thanks

Thanks for the link, starter bolts are drilled out for 3/8 bolts with helicoils, and are tight. Yes it is a 2.8 l.

Does anyone know of a starter with a longer nosecone? So that the bendix will hit the ring gear better.

automatics and manual trans often have different starters, i.e. flexplate or flywheel

there should be specs out there for the distance of the ring gear from the bell housing starter mount, it is called the offset, 3/8" and 3/4" are common but not interchangable

bendix

I put a 2.9 in a Bronco II and had the same results. Two weeks ago changed the Bendix out -- went to a 10 tooth from a 9 :yahoo: fixed that nasty starter sound. Bought it from Ebay got it in 3 days might be your solution ??!!@!! :icon_confused:

^^ +1

I have read that as well, 10 tooth gear fixed starter grinding issues in those models/years

Should be able to get the starter back in with the 10 tooth gear by friday. Thanks again.
