Just finished (OR?) 4.0 swap into my BII. Donor is 1991 Explorer, AT, 4WD. Wont start! Ran well before swap. got fuel cuz had leak on fuel return. Will run with a shot of starting fluid. Will appreciate guidance on what to begin checking out.
Thanks for your help, Rob

If it runs on starting fluid, then it has spark. So it either isn't getting fuel or you have no compression.

You say it's getting fuel. How much fuel? What is the pressure? Next would be to check injectors. Make sure they all have power. The ecu grounds them. So make sure the ecu has a good ground. There is a device to see if they're operating. I don't remember what it's called. (Noid light?)

You are correct sir!

Pull any spark plug that's easy to get at
Wipe off the tip so it clean and dry
Put it back in, snug not tight
Crank engine over a few times
Pull out spark plug
Should be WET with fuel
If not then injectors are not opening

In 1991 spark is done with crank sensor and EDIS-6 spark module
This module sends the spark timing pulse to the Computer so it can time the injectors
That's pretty much all the Computer does, the fuel system

Each injector gets 12volts on a Red wire with key on, red wire just runs from one injector to the next
There would be just 2 ground wires for the 6 injectors run back to computer, called Batch fire injection
3 injectors per ground wire, computer grounds the 3 injectors to open them

The computer doesn't "share" grounds internally, so each ground wire for the computer must be ........grounded, lol
Computer pins 20, 40, and 60 are the main grounds

General use diagram here: http://www.auto-diagnostics.info/ford_eec_iv

Thanks for the response .Did better than I expected on the grounds, all looked good.
Fuel pressure at manifold pressure relief - 40 psi
Investigate injectors next.
Thanks, Rob

There won't be a CEL(check engine light) on a 1986 dash, it may have had an "emissions light"
It would be good to have a CEL for a few reasons, CEL coming on with key on means computer is powered up
CEL going OFF when cranking engine over means computer is getting a Timing Pulse for injectors
And then the normal reason, if there is a sensor or control issue CEL comes on when driving and a Code is set

Pin 17 on the computer is the control for CEL
12volt bulb gets 12volts with key on, then computer grounds it(pin 17) to turn it on, so not hard to wire up

Its a pink/green wire at computer pin 17 and runs to the OBD1 connector on main harness, then its spliced at connector and tan/red wire runs to cluster, or pink/green to cluster

MANY THANKS TO ALL WHO ASSISTED WITH A RESPONSE.
Check, check and recheck. Checked wiring and connectors many times.
That large black connector next to the alternator was about 1/8 " from bottom out.
Got a tool down there and click - - I was successful, it started.
Thank you again, Rob
