does anyone know if a ranger ever came from ford with rear disks? the other day i saw a newer ranger in the parking lot at home depot. . . i would guess like an '08. To the best of my knowledge they never came with disks but this definitely had rear disk brakes. also the vehicle looked 100% stock, doesn't look like an axle swap or anything, it was a ford 8.8 that looked un-tampered with. . . . any input?

The 9" is mostly popular for nostalgic reasons.

They aren't as strong as many (falsely) believe them to be nor are they as easy to work on.

And they were constantly leaking....

I'm old enough to actually remember having to work on them.

You know, I think that is an opinion. I have had little experience with the 9", but I have studied under and worked with a lot of guys who are from the 9" era, and most of them seem to miss them.


A lot things that are "easy" or "hard" are a matter of opinion. I know a lot of guys who dread pulling dashes or run at the idea of doing almost anything on a 6.0L but will hog up the electrical diag.

I let them have the electrical BS. I'll pull dashes and rip apart 6.0s all day long and never complain once except when my ribs are sore or when I can't get up because Ford didn't put and Oh Crap handle on the driver's side (stupid Edge).

From what I have heard the best 9" is weaker than the best 8.8. That said you can do A LOT more to a 9" than a 8.8 to make it stronger.

I meant that it was logical because instead of making two axle with the same weakpoint (the axle shafts) it makes a ton more sense to just make one axle.

That is what happens when you start with more room for improvement.

There are weak 9" and there are strong 9" rears (stock). Got lost with the comment about the only making one axle thing. Even the 8" is good to about 400hp with the right center section. Never worked on either of them, never had to.

I knew a guy who stripped 6" of ring teeth off an 8.8 with his built 5.0.
 
When I was young, I had to change out a 9" center section, was a lot easier then trying to fix a Chevy 10 bolt.

but that could have just been me.

I had a 69 Cougar that had a 9" in it and I pounded on that car, and never once let me down.

I was refering to the Ranger 7.5 and 28 spline 8.8 use the same axleshafts and wheel bearings. Really the only difference is guts in the center case. The only vehicle that used the 7.5 for the last few years was the Ranger since all the other RWD vehicles were at least sporting a 28 spline 8.8.

Not true. A month ago my shop serviced a 2010 Mustang for rear end noise. We were all quite surprised to find that it had a 7.5 rear. It actually caused a problem because we don't have the tools to set up a 7.5 rear.

That 8.8 axle did have 400,000 miles on it. And Pete did kinda hammer it pretty good. He was trying to jump on the highway in front of a big rig. Instead the engine revved high and the rear made a nasty noise. He went no where.
