would my 88 ranger benifit any from removing the stabilizer bar in the front?

Off-road, absolutely. If it's going to be extremely tall, you may want to think about running it on the street. I had an 88 Extended cab with 5+ inches of lift and ran without it, and it was fine.

As said you will get some travel gains offroad.

I tossed mine on my 91 4 years ago and have never looked back.

I'm running 5+ suspension and 3" body lift on mine and I don't find it unstable on the road.
