I am going to be putting some bed liner on the truck as well but my main question is besides a wire wheel and the bedliner what do I need? Can I lay a coat of paint down first or do I just spray the bedliner stuff on the bare metal?

i think wire wheel may be a bit agressive, i did a roll on liner on my 03 and spent 2 days sanding with 80 grit. there were a couple of spots that i wire wheeled to stop some surface rust (stupid drop in bedliners) but i just hit those spots with a couple of coats of primer before rolling in the liner. heres something i just found that may help you out

good luck and document and let us see your progress :icon_cheers:

P.S. theres a write up in the tech section, its for roll on bedliner but im pretty sure the prep work is the same for roll on and spray on.

Okay thanks man and will do.
are you using aerosol spray on liner?

I was thinking about it but I can use a gun if need be. Is there a major difference between the two?

i've never used the aerosol stuff on a truck. however, i did paint one of my riflestocks with it. it was grippy, but not enough for my taste. i had some roll liner, so i went and bought a textured roller and rolled it on and it was much better. so that's what i'd do.

for prep, spend a day or two and sand the mess out of everything you want bed lined. tape off what doesnt need to be lined and then roll it on. then do another coat after it dries and i think you'll be very happy with the result.

Dont listen to anything we say, follow the manufacturers directions.

With that said.

I sprayed my whole truck years ago. Manufact. directions said to scuff the surface, wipe it down with xylene, allow to dry (took all of 1 minute to dry), then spray it.
What i did... Sanded the whole truck with 80 grit, wiped it down with xylene, allowed it to dry, and sprayed it.

I junked the truck 5-6 years later with 2 scratches in the bedliner, that was after years of abuse. 1 scratch was from an engine block that slid in the bed, the other was from the forklift I picked it up with. So, allow me to quote myself:

follow the manufacturers directions.

Scratch it up with 80 grit until the clear coat is hazy, scratched and grey. Then wipe it down wit MEK (methyl ethyl ketone) TWICE and the roll or spray your liner on.

I did this and that shit ain't ever coming off.
