sporatic rattle from engine compartment

I have been trying to figure out what this rattle is it happens at random rpms no matter low or high if truck is driving down the road. if i lift off the gas and get back on it usually stops the noise for a bit. the odd thing is that it doesn't do it all the time and doesn't matter if engine is hot or cold. i started with the belt tensioner since it felt week..... no change checked all the pulley none seem to wobble. but as i reached down to check the balancer for movement( belt was off when checking pulleys) i noticed odd movement in the fan video linked :temper:here :temper:so my guess is the fan is getting a wobble and causing the noise the clutch itself is still strong like it should be just very bad wobble. what do you guys think?

That'd be clutch bearing going out then, no? probly time for new clutch or an efan
 
that is my current thought atm so gonna swap it out tomorrow hopefully and will find out i guess :icon_confused:
 
Funny thing: In my haynes manual for the 2.3l clutch removal it says do not tip the clutch over or all the fluid will pour out. So how does it not fly out when it's running? Or maybe mine was just bone dry and they're writing manuals while intoxicated.
 
could be just enough fluid in it to fill half so its not but the bearing where it could leak out......

Also, for the issue of not tipping the trans, the seals will keep the fluid in while the trans is in it's normal position, and the fluid isn't all laying on top of the seal. Tip the trans over and the pressure is more than the seal was designed for, it will go EVERYWHERE. Done it more than once.

my engine is a 4.0 and not talking about transmission clutch. talking about radiator fan clutch.

My money is on the timing chains. The rear one specifically.
 
this isn't a timing chain noise. more of a vibration noise i have heard that dreaded noise from the timing chain on a friends truck. and the difference is like night and day.
 
You sure it is in the engine compartment? The behavior you describe is that I would associate with a catalytic converter heat shield rattle. Or something loose in the exhaust.

Just takes one of the welds rusting thru and at the right speed, engine load a sympathetic vibration occurs.

When I first experience one I thought it was engine compartment at first.

hmm that could be true i am replacing the fan clutch none the less cause that play concerns me. but i will crawl under and look at the exhaust as well.
