I have a 97 with the 4.0 and when u are cruising at highway speeds and let off the gas to slow down it wants to spit ( best explanation ) out the tailpipe pretty loud. Doesn't do it everytime just intermittingly. I just need some ideas to get started diagnosing it. It is driving me crazy!!!!

did a quick check at advance a few weeks ago and got a DTC code of P1443 Manufacturer Control, Auxiliary emission Controls and a DTC pending code of p0420 Catalyst Efficiency below threshold (bank 1)? Dont know what they mean exactly, I have did away with the cats.

You don't have cats? Thats probably part of of the problem right there.

This is the second ranger I have owned and didn't run cats on and it didn't effect them. Also the cats have been off for about a year or so and it ran fine before this problem arose.

That is your problem. Why wouldnt you have cats? unless they were extremely clogged. Removing them probably wont do much for you except pollute the air like none other, but your choice. your P0420 is saying the effectiveness of your cats is below what it should be, duh. The other emission code may be effected by it to. You probably get some amount of fuel through the exhaust and its just backfiring on deceleration.

Yeah, taking out your cats doesn't really help... Your engine doesn't move enough air for it to be a restriction... Your just screwing up the air... I've got two cats on my LT1 Camaro (it came that way and I made sure I put them back)... It doesn't drive any different than when they were off (of course I made sure to drive it around with open headers:D)

my mustang has six cats :icon_confused: i would never remove one i dont belive they restrict like people think unless there clogged but if its clogged just buy a new one

the p0420 is kinda obivious, I also talked to the owner of the exhaust shop that just so happens to own a 96 4.0 ranger and isn't running cats and he also pulls the same code (p0420, figured that) and that is all he pulls up and he has had no problem with the setup for years now. It also doesn't sound like your average backfire. This problem just arose, not when I had them removed. I going to hook it up to a comp. this weekend at my buddys shop that he works at. that should tell exactly whats going on with everything. well see how that turns out.

6? Wow... Never heard of that, lol... Catalytic converters aren't a restriction unless they are clogged, search for a picture of the inside of one and you'll see why...

You will be surprised at how much it wont exactly tell you everything. It will tell you some, but pinpointing can be a PITA sometimes, so just be prepared to search.
