i replaced my u-joints in the front axle and when i took the spindle off the passenger side all the needle bearings from the spindle bearing fell all over the ground so clearly i replaced that also but now theres a really bad growling noise coming out of it... what should i have used to grease it? and how should i have greased it? i used multi purpose hard grease and packed it in similar to how u would do a wheel bearing

also the old bearing had worn a slight grove in the axle is this going to make the axle not ride in there properly and just ruin the new bearing?

Unless your hubs are locked, there should be no reason for the bearings to be moving since spindle bearings support the axle shaft which doesn't turn unless hubs are locked.
My guess is the wheel bearings are the cause. either too loose or too tight.

Yup what they said...

Spindle bearings just make the axles rattle and clunk around. When driving 2wd unlocked.

And locked in you probably won't hear them as they chew up your stub shafts and ruin your locking hubs.

I used to have those problems... Spindle bearings, axles, u-joints, wheel bearings... Parts parts and more parts. Welcome to the TTB.

Som beach, good to know.;brownbag;

Adjusting wheel bearings is a non-art. The only way you can screw it up is to tighten them. You tighten and turn and tighten and turn to squeeze out the excess grease. Then loosen until the tension collapses out of the nut, and secure it. A little play in the hub--pulling and pushing on the wheel--is fine. You want zero force on the nut and zero play in the wheel, but that is impossible.

Spindle bearings are the most over-looked bit of a 4x4 Ranger. The outer stub shaft is supported between the spindle bearings and the bearings or bushings in the lock-out.

Straight axles also have all of those components. The biggest TTB D35 issue is the spacing of the wheel bearings.

what about with my auto hubs wouldnt the axle spin all the time? or is it they lock in when theres power put to them? either way you think the wheel bearing is to tight or to loose how tight should it be?

^^^ Will already explained that.

And yes auto hubs lock only with a load on them.

The wheel bearing should be tight enough that you can't feel play when grabbing the edges of the tire and rock it, but loose enough that you can spin the rotor easily with the wheel off.
