I have a '87 ford ranger and the stupid speedometer cable wont diconnect. please help

if you are talkng bout the dash you have to push the white sleeve there is a tab closest to engine bay push that will release

You have to squeeze the side of the white collar, it's right at the speedo. I can barely get my hand snaked up there. If the cluster is loose, you can see the collar easier.
Good luck,
Richard

its a tough one to get at, ive found that once the bolts are out of the cluster if you go under neath the truck and pull all the slack out of the cable and feed the excess into the cab you can get the cluster to pull out far enough to comfortably release the white collar without losing circulation in your hand.

foroffroaddriving is sooo right. I needed to replace the instrument lights in my '87 and the only hold up was the speedometer cable. I couldn't get the instrument cluster out far enough to replace the bulbs. Unless you're a 90 pound contoriounist with 4 foot long skinny arms, reaching up under and through the back of the dash to the "quick" disconnect is really hard.

Disconnect the speedometer cable from the transfer case (you don't even have to jack up the truck) with a 7/16 socket, unscrew the small phillips head screw by the gas pedal that holds the cable to the firewall and feed out as much cable as you need. I had plenty of slack to get the cluster out and get to those teeny bulbs. Now I can read my gauges at night.
