There is no order to when the speedometer and odometer quit. The truck is a 1998 3.0L 2wd automatic. The cluster is the one with a tach if that even matters.
It started happening when my driving lights and dash lights were on. Within 5-6 miles from startup with the lights on the speedo/odometer unit would stop working. If the lights were off the speedo/odometer unit would work as normal. I cleaned every ground on the truck. My battery is brand new. I checked the headlight switch and dimmerswitch they are good. I even swapped clusters with other trucks I have and it still does it.
I noticed if I turned the dimmer switch down all the way so the dash was not illuminated when my driving lights were on the speedo/odometer unit would stay working. I checked every ground again, it sure seemed to be a ground issue, but I guess not because it didnt fix anything.
The other day I took a very long trip during the day. All lights were off, just the heat and radio were on, which never affected anything before. About an hour into the trip and 60 something miles it just quit and started bobbing around every once and a while. I turned off the heat and radio too see if that was an issue but it made no difference.
Ive cleaned every ground on the truck multiple times and checked all ground wires. Battery is brand new and working perfectly. Headlight switch is working fine. Dimmer switch is working fine. Cluster has been swapped with two other known good ones and still does the same thing.
Im hoping im just missing something really stupid
Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks guys.
