today it was cold( 45 degrees) and while driving, my speedometer wouldn't go past 15 mph when im going 30... later on in the day, it warned up and it worked normally. what causes this? since there more speed traps than hazzard county out here, i kinda need this to be accurate..

Might be beneficial to you to take the cable out and clean it up good. Apply a good coat of teflon or a nice thin lithium grease for cold weather applications to the square drive or replace it. I'm sure others will chime in but the issue seems to me like it would be the cable.

figures, i guess its where it hooks up to the trans thats the issues..
on a side note, im having realy bad fuel filler neck problems... first time since i reinstalled my bed that i took my truck to a gas station, well i only managed to get 45 cents in before it shuts off, press again fuel squirts out the fill hole.. i had this happen before with a gas can, but i figured it was due to the truck leaning on the driver side on a dirt road.. well, i noticed a low spot in my filler neck were air can get trapped, i had my step mom lean on the passenger side while i was lifting up the driver side and it worked, took fuel in no problem, so how do i get rid of an inch of slack in the fuel filler neck? ive tried zip-ties to pull the slack out, i think i need more...

87 2.3 had the cable and 88 2.3 has the sensor according to my chiltons I would imagine if it is a late 87 it might have the sensor normally a sticky cable will cause the speedometer to jump. If it is the sensor try cleaning the connector good with elect cleaner and use dielectric grease to put it back together for moisture.

Really? My 95 has the speedo gear in the trans too.

I think the sensor is just there for the cruise control module. Most ford vehicles used cables until the mid 90s.
