hello guys,
new to the site and was wondering if there was a way to disconnect the odometer so that no miles get put on my 1990 ranger. my work with motorcycles tells me that this might disable my speedo but i'm fine with that.

at the same time.... how much value would be added to a '90, probably in poor condition, by having 100 less miles.

i know im gonna get hell for this, but it doesnt matter

i disabled the odometer on my old 87, there was no point in in functioning after it passed its mechanical limits(like 3x over LOL) well, i popped it apart and ontop of and on the bottom side of the odometer i put it manually to 666 and superglued it into position. worked like a charm and my speed still worked fine LOL

jerk! jk!

what about oil changes? gas mileage? speeding?... if it affects the speedo.

ugg u guys r crazy....no i dont want to botch the odo to sell it, im 17 n the rents r goin out of town....jeez.

sweet! now is this gonna be a big job? like how much time will it take? is there like a step by step process to this? HELP!!! i've only had it for a few days....

Why didn't ya say so? Just spend half the night in forward gears and the rest in reverse...

You can unplug the speedo cable from either the t-case (or trans depending on 4x4 or not), or from the back of the gauge cluster, but you lose your speedo reading.

The other option is to take the gauge cluster out and reset it manually (but it's a bit of a PITA.

Or you could hit up a junkyard and pull a gauge cluster. Swap in your cluster and run it, then swap back. I can usually swap 'em in about 5 mins flat (way faster than resetting the OD).

Be safe ya'll.:D

Ahh.. The internet. How would we be felonius without it?

i wouldnt pull the cable from the t-case and leave it open. theres a hole there thats gotta stay plugged to keep things clean. if you disconect it from the gauge cluster, youre gonna have a cable flopping around and spinning as you drive. i would swap clusters and swap back before the parents get home.

Good point. I blame being tired from a long day as to why I didn't think to mention that bit.

Hardest part of swapping clusters is getting the plugs out of the back and the speedo cable unplugged. Takes a bit of fighting sometimes to get it undone, you gotta pull the cluster out as far as possible so you can get your hand back there an do it by feel. Two wiring harness plugs with a clip on each end that you push in to release it, then the speedo cable IIRC you have to pinch the plastic dohicky a certain way and wiggle it off.

If it's an auto tranny, you have to be careful not to snap the lil wire for the shift indicator, I always just take out the two lil bolts that hold it in so I don't have to worry so much about it. IIRC there's 4 T-15 (might be T-20) torx screws that hold the cluster in. Dash panel is held in by some clips and the ash tray has two bolts that have to come out to pull it. Pulling the trim off the steering wheel helps. After you've done it a couple times, you should be able to pull it apart, swap, and put it back together in less than a half hour.
