speedo/odometer cable

Hardest part of swapping clusters is getting the plugs out of the back and the speedo cable unplugged. Takes a bit of fighting sometimes to get it undone, you gotta pull the cluster out as far as possible so you can get your hand back there an do it by feel.

see, theres your problem. youre doing it wrong. lay on the floor, on your back, with your legs hanging out the door. find the cable and follow it up to the cluster. unplug it before you unbolt the cluster. now a 2nd generation may be lightly different, but ive done this on my 87 several times after i broke my first cluster trying to make room to do things your way....

I didn't think that was possible on a second gen... might have to try it next time... but some of the junkers I've pulled clusters from, I didn't want to think about laying on the cab floor, lol.

ok cool. well its reae wheel drive and taking the speedo cable sounds easier than taking it from the ins. cluster. exactly how do i get to it and how long might it take?

actually, which method is faster, and how does it get done?

I found it easier to drop my steering column down a little so I could get my hand in there to disconnect the wires and cable when I had to change the bulbs. The steering column is held in by 2 17mm bolts, if I remember correctly.
