spectacular water pump failure. now bad alt?

Working on an 03 crown vic police car...
The water pump broke and sprayed water everywhere in the engine compartment. I changed the water pump but the alternator smokes, squeels, and gets really hot. I know water can damage the alternator but the parts store tested it and said its ok. But I think maybe their tester doesn't spin at the same rpm because it didn't smoke or squeel during the test.
Anybody have any suggestions?

How long has it been going on? IMHO, if it hasn't been long, I'd just see if it goes away after a little driving around. Antifreeze is petroleum based so I'm sure this is the source of the squeal and the smoke.

There is NO petroleum in antifreeze whatsoever. The main ingredient in antifreeze is ethylene glycol, which is an alcohol.

Well I went ahead and put it back on andthe problem seems to have gone away. I guess it just had some antifreeze residue that had to burn off.
