Dumb question but just so I can sleep better I better ask.

I took the spare tire off the truck a little while back and I was going put it back but I wasn't sure if it makes a difference if the valve steam is facing the road or up against the bed of the truck ???

its easiest to mount the tire facing up. Valve stem would be facing up as well.

I like the valve steam facing down so you can check the air pressure with out having to remove the tire to do so.

I don't like it under there, at all. All it seems to do is catch road debris and road salt and rust! I just made a bracket on the driver's side bed rail and mounted it there. Easy to get to and does not block vision. Can also be locked.

I have mine mounted with the stem facing the road but then I do minimum off-roading. If I did more trails and stuff I would probably mount it facing the bed so there is less chance of ripping it off the rim on the trail.

It depends on the style of the spare mount. With the T-frame unit used on early Rangers it is almost impossible to mount the spare with the valve facing up.

On the later ones with the cable winch it doesn't matter as far as ease or quality of securing, and so I prefer to put the stem facing down for the reason that Cat mentioned. It makes it a breeze to periodically check the spare's pressure without the need to remove it.
