Anybody here changed their truck over to the crankdown style hanger? I am looking at doing it, my old hinge type has been cut away. Thinking the crank could be inserted in through the tire well.

I didn't realize when I bought my 96 that the previous owner sold or removed the tire carrier...until I'd already scraped my 88 frame with a perfectly good tire carrier...so I'm looking for one too...I don't see it being a problem to install either one on any Ranger frame from what I've seen of them...but I prefer the older style if I go that route.

Ideally, I'd like to keep the spare out from under the truck for my purposes because getting down on the ground is much harder these days...so I'm looking for a swing out style or one that I can attach to the tailgate...

EDIT: I went to check out parts at LMC and it appears they don't carry the entire spare tire hangers...only some parts...so probably need to hit the junk yard anyway...

Here is the link for the LMC parts...

I just mounted mine to the bed sidewall, drivers side, in front of the wheel arch. I think it would fit behind the arch, also. I made the mistake of blocking the tire winch hole, between the tailgate and bumper by a " Fire" led strip. I liked the light better than having the spare under the truck.

I think this works better.

I like the winch on my F-150... but if that cable breaks you loose your spare. If the winch seizes you can only look at your spare, no spare for you on the side of the road. :nono:

I rotate my tires when I change the oil, I get the spare out and use it as a crutch as I rotate. It is a good time to exercise the winch and make sure it still works and make sure the spare still has air in it.

Either of these are good for my needs...

This is what I'd heard about the newer style spare holders...and why I didn't want mine under the truck...

I still remember the time I blew out a tire in a junkyard...sitting in the middle of a mud pond...there was no way I was going to try to change it there...:icon_rofl:

Unfortunately, aluminum rims are not meant to be driven on when the rubber is missing....:annoyed:

I keep an eye on the cable its like 5\16 nylon covered cable its strong stuff. I wont totally lose my spare. I have driven down the road without it being latched lol

I have also driven a vehicle with a flat tire on aluminum rims and i did no damage suprisingly.

I have plans to do this.

It appears to sit lower than I like, as my 6 yo grandson would ask " why for you do dat? " .

Maybe another pic, or 2.

They get corrosion under the nylon coating, it is far from unheard of for the spare to run away without the driver knowing it.

I had planned to mount it higher but it made more sense for it to be mounted low enough to be able to open the hatch on my cap without moving the tire. Since its not an offroad rig the departure angle doesnt matter. I was glad i made that decision.. It makes it easier to throw parts in and out on trips to the parts store lol

I didnt think about that.. Though are we talking about the factory tire carrier or my scrap pile built swing out?

A crank style might be better than the old hinge style, which tends to seize. Grrr.

But either way, a spare hanging underneath is still limited to maximum 28.5" outer diameter, to fit in between the frame rails. That sux if you really wanted a full sized spare (eg, 31) on a matching alloy rim.
Hanging the spare up top allows a full sized spare.

I must go smaller because of the exhaust on the truck. I have a cover/topper on the bed. If a spare is needed it only has to get me to the tire store... So I will try the crank mount soon.

The later model OEM style with the winch

The tire winch cable was busted on my parent's 1997 S10 when they Ebay'd it back in 2003. Never been fixed (and given what a rustbucket it's become it ain't getting fixed). I've never liked the winch kind as they require a lot of turning. Not to mention the fraying issue... Which is why I like the ranger hinged setup.

That said I have the opposite problem, as my '95 Ranger came with a 17" rimmed chrysler spare that didn't fit the existing frame properly... then again, it also had ghetto 16" ricer alloys with 3 of the 4 center caps gone. I since put a set of 15" alloys from a 1st Gen (what I could craigslist back then) but never did install a spare. Been looking for another matching alloy (as one of mine is actually an american racing clone) or the like. Or a set of rims that didn't have ruined clearcoat...

No, I'm not cutting off my hanger and selling it. Although I think one could be sourced at a JY pretty cheaply.
