so everyone i've asked says a 31x10.5 is the biggest tire you can fit underneath in the factory carrier. why is that? is there a way you can mod it into fitting a bigger tire like a 33?

Here is a pic from the top side of the carrier the frame rails for one are not spread far enough ti fit anything bigger for one reason.

I have a 33 under mine, i just let the air out of the tire and got it to go under there. Was a fight not gona lie and not crazy about it but i didnt like it taking up my whole truck bed. I have on board air on my truck so if i ever need it i will just air it back up.

I don't see how that is....unless this is aftermarket. I have a 93 4x4 and my tire holder is different, it swings down, and I can't even fit a 31x10.5 in it even if I tried to force it in.

You are stuck with a smaller tire. Ive seen a 31 stuffed under there but barely. What ive done is mounted a bolt through the rear of the bed and when off road for the day can mount my 33" spare to the bed as if you just threw it in the bed flat.

Otherwise I carry a 235/75/15 size spare under the truck when I need full bed space and not using 4x4. That way if say the rear tire blew out you grab a 33" from the front and throw the smaller spare on the front since you are not using 4 wheel. That way you can at least get to your full size spare.
