I've got one for an auto, but I'm using a manual. I was just gonna cut the inside out of it, so its like 'gasket'. Bolt pattern are the same between the auto and the manual so it'll fit.

I figured it was needed for spacing issues. I'd hate for the trans input shaft to bottom out in the crank then I break the bell housing when I tighten up the bolts.

What purpose does it serve? Is it needed?

The back of the block and the front of the bellhousing are a slightly different shape and the plate covers any holes there would be. You need it there for correct spacing of the parts, starter for instance. The auto one has a removeable bottom section so that you can unbolt the torque converter, the manual one may or may not, I don't remember. To answer your question, yes you need it.

And I'll be OK trimming the auto one to use as a spacer between the engine and the manual trans?
