I have an 88 ford ranger with the 2.9 v6. The exhaust manifold has been replaced with headers, which removes the EGR system, additionally, it also removes the O2 sensors. will this engine run without those parts? Because of this issue, and multiple bolts are missing I need to decide if I sould try to repair what's installed or try to swap the whole setup for something else. What would you do?

'88 doesn't have EGR.

The o2 bung should be in the collector pipe where the left and right bank meet on the passenger side. If you don't have the collector, or the collector doesn't have it, have one welded in. If you're trying to run true duals, good luck.

really? it only has one O2 sensor?

either way, you need all your original O2 sensors...the engine will run quite poorly without it (in addition to getting poor mileage and have poor power output).

looking at a similar engine in the bone yard, there is an egr valve connected to the bottom of the intake manifold, the pipe connects to the exhaust manifold on the left side of the engine. The O2 sensor connects at the Y pipe just foreward of the cats.

86 and 87 had EGR systems, 88s dont. although, 88s will have the EGR provision on both the upper intake and LH exhaust manifold, both are blocked off. if you feel your model year might be questionable, verify the VIN and/or engine calibration code (located on driver door jamb). the headers should have come with an O2 bung on the collector. its prolly there, you just cant see it.

exhaust problem

Hey thanks for the tips with the EGR. I've found an exhaust bung on the internet but I've also discovered another big issue. If I use the headers on this truck, there isn't enough clearance to hook up the shift linkage, the header is right smack it the way. Any sugestions? I'm thinking about just skipping the headers and going back with the stock exhaust manifold.
