I recently bought a 1998 ranger 3.0 v6 4X4, nice well kept truck with 82 K
I was going over it and one of the things on my list was the clutch fan needed replaced as it had a decent amount of wobble play in it.
Took it to a shop to have some of the other items on my list taken care of and had thw replace the clutch fan while they had it.
Well now the thing sounds like a jet engine....it really seems excessive and seems to have lost a noticeable amount of power. It does not seem normal.
Do you think I have the wrong Fan and its moving too much air ??
any insights appreciated.

There are lots of opinons here about clutch fans vs. e-fans. I don't want to get into that debate, I just want to share my experience.
I replaced my mechanical fan about 7 months ago with a factory e-fan from a new 4cyl. ranger along with an adjustable temp sensor, and have zero concerns or problems. It's nice and quiet because it doesn't run unless it's needed. And i noticed a sustained improvement in my mileage. You may want to consider the e-fan option if you're not satisfied with your current setup.

mattinmo,

Your profile does not list the area of the country you live in.
The clutch, when cold in winter will grab tighter than usual when the truck first starts up. This is also when you pay more attention to truck noise.

It should loosen up quickly, but by then you are traveling down the highway listening to tunes. It won't tighten up again until you truck is warmed up real good, which may be next spring :-)
I doubt seriously that the new fan clutch robbed enough power for you to notice, it's most likely something else.
