In the thread "Odd rattle at cruising speeds" I mentioned this:my truck had a ratteling sound at crusing speed(92 ranger 2.3/5spd) until today. That ratteling got louder on the highway and when I got off the hwy the oil guage was 'off'.The dipstick was nearly on the add mark so i put a liter of oil in.However it seems much higher than 1 L would account for.I didn't have my glasses on so I'm wondering if the oil wasn't as low as I thought.Anyway, before I added any oil,it was sounding like a diesel. My buddy thinks it could be the knock sensor and that the oil guage has a faulty conection.I drove it about 25 mi home and it seems normal otherwise.Anybody know what 's happening here? Also, where is the knock sensor? Thanks

Yea,kinda but now sounds like a diesel.I'm thinking seafoam?Thanks

Yea, use some seafoam, that does some wonders to just about anything....

Sounds like you lost an oil pump. If the gauge dropped and your gas motor started sounding like a diesel... yea, that's a problem. surprised you made it home.

after you put oil in did the gauge come back up? and is it still making noise?

I'm thinking you hit it right. The oil guage came back up for about 15 seconds, quivered a bit and fell back down after I put the oil in.I got groceries, alowing it to cool, and the guage did the same thing again. It hasn't worked since. The oil wasn't as low as I thought as it's over full by nearly a liter, doh!I just ran out and checked it.(I didn't have my glasses on when I added the oil.)Thanks

That's too bad, i had a 2.3 die in similar fashion. But to give it credit, i drove mine about 2 miles, then shut it off and pulled the motor, it never actually died. Good motors.
Being that you drove it so far, it probably needs quite a bit of work. Only thing to do now is pull it out and tear it down/rebuild it, or find a donor motor. If you're savy and have the time, I'd suggest rebuilding it. Good luck!

Thanks Bryan. That's probably what I will do.Too cold to rebuild so I am looking for a donor. My son shares a large shop where he does mechanical/body work/ATV's on the side.He has facilities there,120 mi away.I have back problems so I will help him do it I guess.I'm doing a kerosene flush/soak in desperation hopeing to disolve what's plugging the screen.I drained 1 L oil out and added 1L diesel and ran it for10 min, shutting it off 3 times and allowing it to depressurize for about 1 min each time. The first time I shut it off and restarted it the oil needle came up to normal momentairly only to fall again.I'm letting it set overnight;maybe it will disolve the crud and restore oil flow enough to get me through to April?
I'm curious. Is "So-Cal baybay" slang for southern California bay area? Thanks

haha, ya i guess you could call it slang. Maybe time to update that and make it a bit more readable. Good luck with the flush.
