I am replacing my passenger side axle shaft. I get the outboard loosed by tapping it inward. The inboard end was tough. I pryed and tapped and it finally popped....but not really.

The internal axle shaft popped from somewhere in the axle and it is loose and still connected to my axle shaft. What the hell do I do now? Did an internal retainer break when I tried to tap the inboard axle shaft out of the axle?

As the truck sits, the CV axle shaft is still connected to the "internal" axle shaft. First I need to get those apart. I hope this has happened to a bunch of guys before and one of you nice fella's can tell me what the heck to do!

I've replaced many FWD axle shafts and have worked on cars for a long time so I'm not a newbie. I'm just a bit freaked out on this Ranger. It's been fighting me the whole way!

Please advise!

The inner shaft will be held inside the differential with a retaining clip and cannot come out without removing that clip unless you managed to somehow break it?!?

If that is the case you need to drop the entire differential from the truck and remove the diff cover and see what you need to replace.

what year truck?

pop it out of the old cv, put it in the new cv and stick it back in the housing.

should be able to lock it in with the clip

Is there a how to write up on dropping the axle if I need to do that?

Does it look like this (Don't pay attention to what we are doing haha)

I have the internal axle in my hand along with the CV joint axle. The internal axle looks like it has the same little clip on the end of the shaft as the CV joint axle. Do I really just tap it back in until the clip engages? And then install the CV?

Sasquatch posted above that there is a retaining clip and that it can't come out unless I broke it. Is that true? Camodown makes it sound like the internal axle just snaps back in. That is what it looks like to me.

I'd love input...PLEASE!!

Yes - Camodown - It looks EXACTLY like that minus the burly guy and the big saw.

Put the inner shaft and cv together and make it look like the pic above.

then insert the inner shaft into the housing and it snaps back together. It is supposed to come out, that is normal
