Hi all I'm a member from ford ranger forum. For the past year I've ben using your tech library and stuff for info whenever i got lost on my first ranger. Figured I'd go ahead and join here as well! I bought my 86 ranger for 500 and planned to rebuild the 2.9l v6, instead i woke up one morning to find a 4bt cummins engine sitting in my dad's truck, so....deisel swap? i think yes! heres some pic of my rangers and the engine, I hope to love this site as much as i do frf forum!

( the gray one was my first, but i traded it for a kfx 700, the blue is the project one.)

Here's the 4bt, It only has 500 hours on it so its in pretty good condition, its just really dirty since it was used to run a tar pump on the back of a truck.

Welcome to TRS. I like diesels. Make sure you start a build thread so we can all follow along. :)

jut an fyi if it wasnt in an automotive application it may have a different governing set up. if so then you will need to convert it over to on road application, or itl be tricky to drive since its set up for continuos duty

I think the guy who owned it took it out of a delivery truck, and adapted the pump unto it, ill find out more when i can clean it and an get it on a stand. If i did have to convert it how would i go about it? thanks for the heads-up

That's great man.
Those trucks are both nice.

Good luck with your build! Please make a thread on here documenting it!

i know the pumps would have to be swapped. im not too sure what other things would have to be done. make sure you take the timing cover off and check on the kdp. what plans do you have for the engine? stock or beefing it up

Ill keep it stock for the first year or so mainly, i do have a small turbo off a saab 9-3 i was thinking of putting on it since its a non-turbo :/. when u say kdp do you mean that little pin that can sometimes fall out and mess up the gears? I sent you a pm cummins, but ill ask here too. it looks like in ur intro thread you were running stock TTB? how did you manage that?

thanks and I sure will man! i know this hasn't been done as frequent as a 302 swap, so hopefully my build will help others who are interested in this swap as well.

Its a 4B not a 4BT. Theres no turbo. Which means there probably arent any pistons cooling jets. And as Dave said, the pump will need some work or replacement.
Ditch the mech fan, go electric. I assume your planning that anyway, by the looks of the fan.

What trans do you plan on running?

You may want to keep an eye on my build thread, I'm putting a 4BT into my '95 Ex. Its not exactly the same, but you should be able to get an idea of what it will take. Also see Dave's (Cummins_Ranger) build thread (if you read this, post a link). I havent been able to find too many full build threads, there are a few though.

KDP = killer dowel pin. Yes, thats the little pin that falls into the gears and takes out the engine.

I thought 4BTA meant turbo, just looked it up so I know now, hopefully though it will be converted to turbo after i get it working and get settled into college. And yes def doing the E-fan conversion.

I looked at RichD's build page and it said he was using an f150 5spd, I'm leaning toward that route since f150's are common around here so availability ins't an issue, and they already run a 8.8 rearend, which i'd like to use rather than the stock 7 one.

I've been reading your thread, as well as RichD's, i havent found Cummins_ranger's though. I think it was your build thread but you said you were going to school for mechanical engineering? i might have the wrong person

Sorry about that, how do I rename the thread? i haven't had to do that so i dont exactly know. And i saw a TRUCKS episode on the dowel pin, I'll see about that once the engine is on a stand and out of the weather.

4----4cyl.
B----B series
T----Turbo
A----Aftercooled

The M5OD-R2 from a f-150 will be fine for a stock-mild 4b or bt. If you plan on making some power, go with a ZF 5-speed, np435 4-speed, or something similar.

Look for an Explorer(95+) rear axle. 8.8, 31 spline, disc brake. That should work good for you, its about the right width.

I dont know.

The KDP is an easy fix. If its out some, knock it back in. Peen around the hole with a center punch so it cant come out.

I think this is all Dave has on his swap on here.

If i use the f150 tranny and T-case and swap the rearend, will i need to get new length drive shafts made or will stock be enough? I plan on using a d30 from an xj(94-up with no vacuum connect ) for the front since its the same bolt pattern. think it will hold up the weight well enough with a leaf spring style setup? i dont plan on doing any hardcore offroading at all, and i think im gonna go 33's, 35's when i get stronger axles.

i only have 1 build thread and its on 4btswaps. i would highly recommend joining.
this is my build thread over there.

there is also a guy out in Idaho with a P-pump build, very well done. look up p-pump 4bt ranger his username is tractor_boy

if you use the f150 trans make sure its from an 8 cylinder gasser. the bellhousings are different from the v6...i made that mistake DOH'

as for rear, ive been using stock 7.5 for a while with no problems...i also dont abuse it, well thats a lie...i dont do hard starts.

Yeah, I've been meaning to talk to you about that. The bell housing you had was for a mod motor, not a v6. The 3.8/4.2 use the same bolt pattern as the small block. I know this for a fact, I've bolted v6 trans's to v8 engines. Only 3 of the mod motor bolts line up, thats what you had.
