Background:

It's been sitting for about two years. The owner's son said it was leaking water (I thought probably a head gasket). His son replaced the water pump and then went in the Army and left it with his dad.

My son bought it from him for next to nothing, so I thought it was worth a shot. We brought it home, cleaned it up, changed the oil and filter, air filter, and then put in a new battery.

Won't start. Ok... checked that the butterfly valve was working, cleaned the idle air valve (not sure how to check to see if it is actually good), cleaned the MAF. Checked the rollover switch.

Won't start. Checked for spark (used a timing gun on the various plug wires). All good.

Checked the fuel pressure. Zero while "on" or cranking. Ah-ha (so I thought). The fuel pump was running, but making odd noises so we removed the bed and put a new one in. Much better (runs for a second when ignition switch is put to on, etc). Replaced fuel filter while at it.

Won't start. Check for fuel pressure at Schrader valve - still a dribble. Hmmm. Fuel pump -> filter -> pressure regulator. So I replaced the fuel pressure regulator today.

Still won't start. Seems to have some pressure now, but I'll have to borrow the gauge from AZ again to confirm it is in the right place. Not sure why it won't be now - unless some injector is leaking badly into the engine. And those aren't exactly easy to get to <sigh>.

Any other thoughts for now? I'm still waiting on the factory manual I ordered - so a little in the dark for now. Also - being a '91 I assume there really is nothing much to scan - right?

I also bought new plugs, but admittedly the old ones are really hard to get to, and the easiest one (front drivers side) is REALLY in there. I was hoping to get the engine hot then remove it easier.

Using a breaker bar to get the first plug out - we got them all changed.

Now I know the problem - drivers side headgasket. Plugs were wet, and it turned over enough afterwards to drip coolant out the exhaust pipe (no muffler on it).

So... some more work to do - but at least we know what it is now.

good job...bringing another Ranger back from the dead......

My guess is cracked head. Purchased two heads from Odessa cylinder head, Clearwter, Fla. E-bay as Clearwater Cyl Head also. New castings complete bolt on, half price what local auto parts wanted. Castings from Austrailia. Supposedly extra material in crack prone area.
727-299-9058. Been on over a year no problems. :icon_cheers:
