Son injured his knee in football....

i had a similar injury to my left knee 10 years ago. Nver swelled, or bruised. But was achey, and when walkin/bending i would get the sharp pain. Turns out i barelely tore a ligmament. Not in half but enough to create a "bur" per say on the edge of it, so when bending walking that bur would rub against other parts in my near creating the pain. I went in and they did microscopic surgery to shave the bur off. All of 4 stitches to do it and with in a week i was back to normal.

ya the bur as i understand is described as the ligament it self is the rubberband and when you stretch it the ends like shred i dont know what they call it and they get worse the more you use it

Echoing others in here and tell them to go ahead and do the MRI. XRays are good for bones but they won't show the soft tissue. My mother and I found that out the hard way.

My mother tore her ACL while in the Army, they took XRays and told her it was a sprain and gaver her good ole Vitamin "M". I am not sure how long after but it was pretty long, she got an MRI on both knees. Since her torn ACL was misdiagnosed she overused her right knee and damaged that one as well.

Mine is about the same story.

Get that MRI.

That's exactly my story. I'm no featherweight and did EVERY thing an idiot teen does, jumps from, lands, climbs with...on my good knee exclusively and it wore down pretty quick in those 3 1/2 years. Some days walk bowl legged with a limp, some days feel like climbing a mountain. The body is an interesting yet confusing thing. Better safe than sorry Jim.

Jim, it may be a tear in the Patella cartilage. A friend of mine got hit like that and had that happen.

My best wishes to your son, hope it's just sore.

i played d-line (tackle) and started varsity as a freshman, the middle of my 10th grade year, i was sissored, before i made my 5th sack on the QB, my knee poppped out to the left and with my weight landing on it, it shot up 4.5 inches up my leg, laying on the field it was the most undesirable pain i have ever felt, and to this day i still cringe to think back, but i was hauled off the feild on a stretcher, and the EMT pulled it pack into place ( the 2nd most undesirable pain i ever felt) and rushed me to the ER. I tore all my tendons in my knee and decinigrated the cartlege (spelling) broke my knee cap. surgery was an option but a 30 % pass rate, i wasnt staking my walking abilities on 60% fail, the doc said it would regrow to an extent and be able to walk fully again, but now 3 years later, i still lay in bed all night sobbing because my knee hurts so bad i cant sleep. I never touched the field again.....

I had a torn medial meniscus on one knee...went to the top knee surgeon in Canada and he wanted to do orthroscopic surgery to remove the offending piece...I talked with three others who had the same surgery and they said "DON"T"...it'll grow back...

I didn't get it done, mostly because the swelling had eased after a week...knee still pops once in a while but I haven't had the problems that those who had the surgery experienced...like pain, knee locking up...leg suddenly can't hold body weight...

Anyways...if you know a good knee surgeon at least get the diagnostics done...if something is partially torn like the ACL or other ligament then that should be repaired because it will break later with less force...if its' the cartlidge on the bone it's a toss up as to whether you want to have it done...

your son is young enough that the cartlige can grow back...but ligaments don't heal themselves...

Hope he's OK otherwise...

I did hardwood floors for a few months last winter and that wore out my knees pretty good. If I'm kneeling on something and I put weight on the right spot on my left knee it burns like you would not believe. Definitely one of the worst pains I've felt. Also I can put my feet flat on the floor and twist my leg and make my knee pop. I know my sister had to to get a couple of surgeries on her knee after falling on some ice while snowboarding. I'm not sure if week knees run in my family....

Other than the above my knees never bother me, so it not be too big an issue. But an MRI will definitely get you a better look and what's going on in there.

yours sounds like you've got a callous or possible bone buildup where it shouldn't be...that happens when you do repeated motions or put weight on body parts (sorta like bedsores but they are from not moving more than moving) that are not meant to bear weight...you might be able to get it scraped back...or maybe it will go away with time...I had callouses on my feet from walking barefoot on hardwood floors for ten years (martial arts) and they finally disappeared after about five years...

Well that's good to know I guess. Do you mean a bone callous? Because the skin isn't calloused at all, still baby soft, lol. I don't think it'd be worth it to get something done about it, especially since I'm in school now and even after I quit doing the flooring it became much less of an issue.

More like a bone buildup where it shouldn't be...the specialist I saw said that when we put stress on our bodies it reacts with trying to do what it can to protect or enhance the affected parts...when you're kneeling you're putting excessive weight onto the front part of the bone that is normall meant to support weight above it...so your body probably put more bone tissue forward and maybe some subcutaneous underpadding that wouldn't normally be there...and when you press on that area now it is somehow connecting with a nerve...that's what causes the burning sensation...

But as you age and if you don't go back into flooring it will probably go away...I haven't had any knee problems since I stopped full force kicking into nothingness...(part of form practice)...

Yeah, I think it's safe to say I won't ever do flooring again. Last weekend I helped do the floor at my girlfriend's house and I'm pretty sure that'll be it for me.

We'll see how it feels as time goes by, it to be getting better.

All better. He was out a couple games, stretched, practiced, and got back in. I think he was afraid to start practicing but felt a lot better after he started practicing again. Once he started practicing with the team he was right back in the groove.

Just turned out to be a sprain.
