i have a 1988 ford ranger with the 2.3. it will turn over all day but wont hit. ive changed the coil the plugs and still no spark. i am good with old motors but not this new sensor stuff. please any info be much appreciated

Check the ignition control module. It's a small gray box that says, if oem, "Motorcraft DIS" on it. It should be mounted on the front of the intake manifold. When I get home I'll look in my powertrain/emissions manual and give you testing procedures on it to see if it's bad.
 
Did you check the timing belt to make sure it is turning the cam? Have someone crank the engine with the timing cover off (or you might be able to see the cam shaft moving) and if the cam is not moving then your timing belt broke...

That is what actually gets the spark running around the distributor...you could also try popping the distributor cap and see if the distributor is turning...if not...same idea...your timing belt is broken...

I didn't see your post until after I'd posted...may have DIS, but may also have an ignition control box like my 88...Ford may have introduced DIS in late 88 but I have no idea...

Anyway, I learned the hard way to always check the cam/dist before throwing parts at something...even DIS and DAT...

am I missing something?............I agree it sounds like a timing belt check is in order .........

Hmmmm...not sure, but if I find one I will let you know...whatever it is...:icon_rofl:

J/K...I think it was about DIS...they changed somewhere around 89 to it, but previous versions had a distributor...at least I think that was what it was about...

yup, they changed to DIS in 1989 and that is when they added the other 4 plugs.............I still say it sounds like the timing belt...............

If the belt is good and you are not getting spark then time to get a volt meter (ohms) and measure a few things...

first would be the coil...but this is very high voltage usually so be careful with the meter...set it to the highest setting (0,000 of volts) and put one end in the coil opening or on the peg and ground the other one to the body or engine...then turn the key on but don't try starting it...you should get a reading of thousands of volts usually...

If yes, then do the same on the distributor end of the cable from the coil...if same do the same thing on the end of one of the plugs...at this point though you should remove the distributor cap to make sure the rotor is turning...in not...the problem is the distributor...put the cap back on and test the end of one of the plugs (or put a timing light on it) and crank the engine...you should also have spark there at this point...if not...try another plug wire...

let us know if that turns anything up...I believe the computer controls the spark on these engines but not really that familiar with the fine points from there...

Uh, he typed 88.

Replace the TFI.
 
Make sure crank shaft sensor

The crank sensor maybe bad the sensor the sensor send the signal so the computer know what cylinder is at to fire spark hope this helps
 
Check crank sensor it sends signal to computer to know what cylinder to fire spark on if sensor is completely bad will not send a signal. Good luck
 
whats tfi stand for. its been raining here or to cold so im still lookin. someone stripped the screws heads on disy cab
