I searched the forums and decided to go the simple route to try and fix the noise from my valve train. Drained a quart of oil and replaced it with a quart of trans. fluid. Within seconds after startup it quieted down nicely. After I drive it a little while I'm going to go with synthetic and see if if keeps quiet.

I'm Doing the same thing in a couple days to try to free up a sticky lifter. Glad to hear it worked, it usually does last by the way. How long did you run it with the atf?

Works better than all those "engine flush" products because it cleans just as good, and is packed with detergents that work wonders.

I'm going to run it this way for 100 miles and then put synthetic 10w30 in it.

I would not use full synthetic.
on an old engine
I use Shell Rotella® T5 10W-40
The oil stays in the engine much longer now.
Change every 5000 miles
top off often ... it still burns it just not as much
I have 300,000 miles on my 2.9
many abused before I got it
