Ok my 2002 ranger is getting about 14 to 15 mpg. It got the little 4 litre. The other day i noticed that while its running i was standing by the end of the exhaust and it sounds like normal for about 3 to 4 seconds then it sounds like theirs is an instant rush of exhaust coming out. The truck also shakes a bit at idle. I was wondering if this is bad.

How many miles on it? Whens the last time it had a tune up done? Fuel filter?

The truck almost has 98k on it. I changed the pcv valve and fuel filter no more than 4k miles ago. Just changed the oil the other day but i have noticed this problem since before then. Never does the truck go more than 3k on the same oil. Tune up got done about 10-15k miles ago. My bro did it and i remeber him saying plugs but i am not sure about the wires. . I took the one on the middle driver side out yesterday and it has some greyish residue. I am out of ideas. lol

The rush you felt, did that happen while it had a stable idle? It might be an indication of clogged cats.

I'm wondering

Yup. the truck had been on after driven and fully warmed up, and i felt this.

Why you felt the need to hold your hand over the tail pipe.. Was there an indication you have failed to post here that led you to the tail pipe?

I was standing by the tail gate of the truck and i heard it first then i "investigated" and i put my hand over the tail pipe and i felt it.

Have you done this again? The exiting exhaust is many times not a regular process. Lots and lots of 100K vehicles have a sometimes irregular sound at idle.
This can occur from one or more exhaust valves being just a little bit slow to close or perhaps a little wobly or even a particular hot spot in the system that causes reignition of unburnt particles of fuel.
If it otherwise runs normally I'd simply stay away from the tailgate when it's idleing...
If there is a problem with the exhaust system clogging you will SEE this at speed much more than at idle. The vehicle will simply slow down on the highway from lack of ability to dispose of all the exhaust it is making..

Is the check engine light on? I'd be checking the PCV rubber hoses as they suck thru at about this age vehicle. It will eventually throw a lean bank 1 and lean bank 2 code if it is- but you'll have the leak long before the code. Could also be the EGR opening or closing slow.
