just picked up my first 2.9 ranger the other day for 300. got a great deal on it and it runs awesome, surprisingly, but i gotta say... the 2.9 is probably the slowest vehicle ive ever owned... anything i can do to get more power out of it at a decent price?

Man I was actually surprised with the power these little trucks had.......go to the tech library, there are some things in there you can do to pep it up a bit!

its got more torque than i expected but its ridiculously slow. mileage isnt bad tho

Not without some internal mods. Used to have a mid/high RPM cam, but I sold it to a member on here.

I have a 58mm TB, 5.0L TB -> 2.9L kit, '90 MAF computer, used aftermarket heads milled .030" w/ milled lower (would be good for porting), flow matched injectors, etc. laying out in the garage. Almost have a complete 2.9L in pieces - most parts only have 20K miles - let me know if you need anything.

will do. id just like another ten or 15 horses so that when i pull onto 30 i dont get run over by all the damn truckers

Yeah, drop a 289 in it like I'm going to do to my 2.8!

already on that road with the truck in my avatar. might end up keepin it, might be trading it for another ranger with a 302... all depends on the cash flow. im pretty happy with how well the 2.9 runs out tho. no check engine lights, no overheating, no random misfires.... way better than the chevy(98 monte carlo). a 50 shot'd be sweet tho....

hillbilly down the road gave me a set of plug wires for free last night after i ripped two trying to get the boots off the plugs, im pretty sure they were original plugs and wires too. didnt feel like it was missin all too bad before but man those plugs n wires really woke it up. way peppier now. i think if i put an exhaust on it now itll be a good little truck and hopefully itll last me a couple years if i dont romp on it. the exhaust only goes about 6 inches past the cat, pretty much dead even with the back of the cab. im thinkin about goin and pickin up a thrush muffler for it later today if all goes well. im gonna run a side exit exhaust and have it come out right before the back tire. i wish i had my camera still.... i wanna put some pics up of my latest 300 dollar find

update on the truck, new plugs/wires/cold air intake filter/ cherry bomb exhaust w/ a dump right before the back axle, oil change, it runs way stronger now than i expected it to. alot quieter now too but its still got a decent tone for a v6 with the cherry bomb on it.

throw msd coil on it and some headers you will notice huge power increase.

im working on a better coil for it as soon as i can afford it. headers would be nice too. im actually really surprised how strong and well this truck runs now. i also threw my roll bar in the back of it too. its looking pretty sharp. i really need to get another camera so i can get some pictures up of this truck
