I was in my local parts store getting a new lower rad hose. The store is in a strip mall with alot of stuff around, i was in there 15 minutes and when i came out i started my truck and it was way louder than normal. (Scared the living hell out of me) i look underneath and i had no cat, they had cut the tubing on the engine side and unbolted it from the muffler in 15 minutes in a busy parking lot at 11:30 in the morning.

That sucks!

Cats bring a pretty good price as scrap. Let the scrapyards know as well as the cops. Crackheads will steal anything.

thats pretty crazy. some thieves are gutsy.

bastards. their hands should drop off.

Lol i cant really be too mad though, its just so ridiculous, and i got a free cat from the wreckers so no cash out of my pocket either. Ive just welded a piece of straight pipe to get the noise somewhat away from the cab until i can put the cat in.

Ok, now I wonder if that's why my bronco 2's cat was missing when I bought it and just a piece of pipe welded in its place. Funny those cats can be easily recycled and no one bats an eye, but try to recycle copper wiring and its a whole different story.

Its stuff like this that pisses me off, we work our a**es off to make ends meet, struggle paycheck to paycheck, and then on top of it have stuff like this happen, and its not covered by insurance, warranty, etc. Time to outlaw catalytic converters due to the growing number of thefts.

In Washington if you have a business license which I do you get payed everything up front. But with out you get $30 on the day you recycle & the rest 10 days later UNLESS its all aluminum cans. Most american cats go between $30-65, japan & korea ones go between $50-90 & Geman vehicle are the ones to get a hold of $75-145 EACH. The most I received from taking in cats at once was for 8 cats & received $450

Thats pretty decent money, but doesnt seem like enough to to around cutting them out of peoples vehicles and risking getting caught. But thats just me.

Business licenses are handed out like candy it seems like where I live, nothing is ever checked to see if a business actually exists. These criminals could very well have a business license as well which is how they easily make fast money by doing this.

The only scrap stuff I do is picking stuff up in the hills so it takes me forever to get a trailer load worth while to drive the 70 miles round trip to recycle it. I did 1320 pounds of scrap today for $79.20 enough to cover the fuel I used over the few months gathering this stuff up and the fuel to drive over and back. Yeah you can make more supposedly by separating it all out, but then you need about 4 different trailers, a cutting torch, grinder, etc LOL. By that time its by far not close to being worth it I don't think.

Anyone else on here pickup scrap? What is your advice on how to make this scrap stuff an easier task?

The thieves actually go to homes and steal wiring and stuff, I've heard of them actually going to car lots at night and having a field day with hundreds of vehicles at a time. It makes it hard for the people that actually do honest scrapping, business license or not, it doesn't stop the criminals unfortunately.

The recyclers I've been to pay everything out front regardless if you have a business license or not, so I'm not sure if that would help stop the theft somewhat, but it would sure stop the honest people doing honest work that's where the real problem would be, the criminals would still be stealing stuff unfortunately.

I got 75 for mine when my exhaust fell off my 97 2.3. Made a good dent in new exhaust cost.

Yeah I bet. Exhaust systems aren't cheap. I think if I remember right my exhaust shop quoted me around $280 for complete replacement from the headers to tail pipe.

The nerve of some people, hope he/she/they get caught red handed one day very soon.

I my agthering of appliciances & other misc items that people are contacting me to pick up from my postings on C/L I come upon junk vehicles & some of them are signed over to me to haul them away.

In the next few weeks I already have a 1984 Full size Chevy van thats still being driven given to me as well as a non running 1990 3/4 tn Ford Cargo van from another person, 2003 KIA Rio Wagon with destroyed engine from a tranny shop & a 1986 T-bird race car from yet another person. Im usually taking in $150-300 every other day & once a month I take in all of the Non-ferrous metals. Last truck load of that was $840.

Wish I had that type of luck. Everyone around me would rather have stuff like that set in their yard and rot away than have someone get rid of it for them. Or they act like its made out of gold. I don't bother dealing with people where I live they're nothing but worthless around here.

In Alberta, they don't ever check for emissions stuff. Never.

I chopped the cats off my truck and put in a piece of 2.5" straight pipe on purpose. Sounds mean with the Flowmaster muffler that was already on there.

Here in BC we have aircare, and my truck barely passes with a cat in it so thats not an option for me, unfortunately.
