I've got a rod knock right now so I'm deciding to park it. Never had any machine work done on an engine in NC so plenty of reputable shops around. Question is if I pull the short block will a full rebuild be cheaper than a 1800 remanufactured?

Depends on the machining needed. A master rebuild kit for a 2.9 is like 350 bucks.

However...i would spend the money to get yours rebuilt from someone reputable then buy a remanned that was halfassed by some underpaid wannabe mechanic overseas

A few questions... what are your goals for this truck?

is this your daily driver that needs to be up and running ASAP? If so, you will want to secure another daily driver for a bit.. or throw another running 2.9 in it and drive while you build up the other one

weekend toy/ project that you want to spend serious time and money to make it right? (you will probably be just throwing money down the drain in this case, but it will be fun and we like build threads and pictures here on TRS, so enjoy the cash bleed out :p)

Is this a in the woods/ camping/ fishing/ hunting truck? fahgeddabout it and grab a running 2.9 from a Ranger/ B2 that has a blown up A4LD transmission or is rusted all to hell and back and then run it until that engine dies... or your 5 speed craps out... or your truck rusts into powder...

an 87 makes a 4.0 swap a bit more tedious... maybe a 5.0 swap for the engine and a matching transmission might be the way to go..

A note on different engines... not sure if you are aware, but Ford pretty much did a different belhousing for each size engine, with the exception of the 2.9 and 4.0, which share the same bellhousing... so if you go a different engine, you will likely need the matching transmission to it as well, even if they both came out of a same year Ranger.

the 2.9 is not a horrible engine, but it will take a lot of work to make it really good/ decent. there are some shortfalls with this engine, mostly the heads and pushrods. If you have the ability, the insanity, and the desire to do it, get ahold of @PetroleumJunkie412 and see what he is doing with the 2.9 in his truck. he has some crazy ideas and is crazy enough himself to probably pull them off :)

you should also mention to him that 3.0 is a better engine. :p

good luck,

AJ

Didn't someone just order a maabco engine and were happy with it?

Either way, I talked to them about cams. They know Ford Cologne, which is rare. I'd lean on them. And um. Don't suck. Buy American.

There's a German thing you can do as well. Dump in two cans of ceratec either before or after a oil change. Youll have to look and see if you do it on clean or dirty oil. There's a procedure.

Krauts say works 50% of the time every time

I've ordered from mabbco before they'd be my go to. Thats where the $1800 cap came from if it ist cheaper than that I'm not seeing a benefit of the rebuild. The truck is just a project now I have 2 other dds. I've got 2 grand in replacement parts in the truck specifically for the 2.9l so a swap is not the option for me. Can you even get a short block rebuilt for 1800 bucks?

There is a thread on here with a list of all parts that I'm using for mine. I also have some spare ring sets, Etc. Let me know when and if you start the rebuild on yours, and I can throw some spare components your way for what I paid for them, which isn't much

😊😊😊 REBUILD IT!!!😊😊😊

87Ranger12394:

I rebuilt a 2.9 for under $2k including the following:

-free floating rocker arms
-balanced 1.57 rockers
-cam
-new lifters
-port/polished World heads and intakes flow matched to my exhaust
-head milled .035"
-JBA 3X triple nickel headers
-balanced bottom end
-2.8 flat top pistons
-peened debured rods with ARP hardware
-all Clevite bearings
-Cloyes timing set
-Gates water pump
-Melling hi-volume oil pump/pickup
-JET CHiP
-Borla XR1 muffler
-custom 2½" SS cat back

This engine turned out SO MUCH BETTER than the, mostly stock components it cam from!
