i bought some 20" boss 304's off kijiji for only 350 and the guy said it was 5x114.3/5x4.5. well i went to put them on today and it turns out there 5x135. so im wondering if i could get a wheel adapter. are they safe? or should i try and sell the rims and get some new ones.

id get the cash back or sell em and get some that will fit.
since u said 20" i assume u wont go off road with them lol, so yeah maybe a spacer could help. ive seen a lot of guys using them and seems like they are safe, as long u get some good brand ones.

i have recently just bought 20" wheels for my 88 ranger if you not going off road wheel adapters are fine just dont buy a nock off brand an they well give you an add inch or so space im currently haveing problems with my wheels rubbing an also need to get spacers

get a good set of adapters and not worry about it, and they are plenty of people that offroad with the tough ones. I had a set on my 2wd ford explorer with 20's hopping it on helium at 200psi and would get a foot off the ground and never broke one. Good luck
