As for putting the BII stuff in the Explorer it really depends on what you want in a 4X4. All the driveline parts will cross back and forth. But I have also bought three 91-94 Explorers, all for less than $500 each and I stripped them all down to their shadows. Many times my wife has asked why I don't just buy a Sport instead of turning the BII into one. Well for my I like the turn ratio on the BII and its overall smaller size. I have gotten them places even a Sport could not have gone. Plus it's more challenging this way... If the Explorer is in way better shape then you might want to go that route and it would be easier too. No idea what prices are for running Expos in your area though.
On the PCM, ideally yes. However it will run fine with the PCM it has. I just recently acquired a manual trans PCM for my 88 BII that is really a 93 Explorer now but it drove just fine with the auto PCM. The only thing I have noticed is the idle RPM is lower with the man trans PCM as it does not look for the torque convertor like the auto PCM does. Otherwise I cannot tell any other difference.
And I have to totally agree with 4.0BII I LOVE the 4.0 and 5 speed combo. I have also installed a 4.0/FM146 combo in an 85 BII and it is driving just fine for the owner and he is not overly careful with it.....
