So I guess an E fan conversion is a no brainer for cold climate areas?

Ive been reading a lot about Electric fan conversions which had me thinking it would be ideal for where I live. Here in Winnipeg Mb we have long winter's and temperatures as cold as -30C. I would think that my clutch fan is not only wasting energy all the time when it's not even needed but is also blowing freezing cold air on to an engine that is barely able to keep warm on really cold days.
I would think that an electric fan would show a noticeable increase in mpg in such cold months. But I think I would like the luxury of quicker heat at start up too.

In my opinion electric fan is the way to go. Here in the tropics where we run AC all the time it also helps keep the engine cooler while idling in city traffic by moving more air over the rad and condenser at low engine speeds.

I love my electric fan

If the clutch is operating properly it is not pushing air. It may be turning because of the drag but it is not moving enough air to cause concern even in your cold climate.

An electric fan cause drag of another type and that is the alternator. If you draw amperage on the electrical system the alternator will work harder in order to stabilize the rate of discharge v. the amount of amperage it takes to keep the system operating.

Nothing is free.....if your clutch fan is operating properly leave it alone.

Now, if you can get all the parts for free....go ahead but I doubt you will see any change in fuel consumption. The cold has got you there and moving south will likely be your only choice for MPG improvements.:icon_thumby:

That's why I'm doing it. It's not the tropics but south Texas is hot and humid too lol. E-fan would make a huge difference. Wish there was a cheap easy way to do it well. I'm thinking the lmc kit. It's about 150 but has everything I need and I know it will work :)

You can use used fans from other Ford models

I'm running the single Taurus fan with my 302 asks it keeps her nice and cool. Using a painless wiring set-up on it.

Yeah I have heard a lot about this taurus Fan. Only problem is I'm not much of the mechanical type. Do you guys think I could get one of these Taurus fans and just get a shop to hook this all up for me?
How much will a typical junkyard charge for a Taurus fan? $50?

If you are not doing the work yourself then I would get a fan kit.
Used Taurus fans don't cost much but they will be 15+ years old so should be fitted with a new motor, new motor used to cost $90, not sure how much now.

any recommendations for a good quality e fan kit for my 3.0?

ebay sells all kinds of 16" fan kits. They run from about $100 to over 300 depending on what CFM you are looking at. Don't know about the quality of them though.

The rad on my 94 is 19" and I am on the look for a fan now. I put the mechanical back on it the other day because after almost 2 years of working on it I want to drive it. When I find a fan that I feel fits my needs I'll get a photo of it and put it up here. The sad thing is junkyards here won't let you go exploring.

I have never liked the electric fans, I had one fail on my parents' 88 Ford Tempo and it took me 6 hours to get back home as I could only drive it until it started to get hot then I'd have to pull over and shut it off and let it cool down. Turned a 1 hour drive into a whole day.

At least if the fan clutch fails it will most likely fail with the clutch engaged so you can at least get home, might hurt your power and fuel economy but at least it won't leave you stranded. I've never seen a fan clutch fail in the unlocked position, has anyone here seen it happen?

One thing that would be nice with an electric fan though is a manual switch in the cab to turn the fan off if you are crossing water, or when its not needed.

With a electric fan the car doesn't get hot from driving it, it gets hot from sitting in traffic if the fan is not on. I've done E fans on all my 5.0 Mustangs, even in FL you can drive down the road or on the highway without the fan on, only needed it when I got off the highway sitting in a a lioght or stop and go traffic.

If you car is getting hot while driving down the road (even with no fan on) then there is probably a problem with the radiator.

If you are going to do a swap, familiarize yourself with this great "how-to". It tells you exactly what you need for parts, and how to wire it up.

I just bought one last week. Here's my receipt below. EDIT: The Vovlo relays that are mentioned in the link above - I got two of those for 6 dollars.

I kind of wondered how the electric fans do, all I know is when they fail, they're expensive if a shop has to do the work.

The manual belt driven fan/clutch setup has never bothered me and is mechanical, which means for me something I can deal with easily myself. I don't do the whole electronics stuff in vehicles just more unnecessary stuff to go wrong LOL.
