Ok, I get to pick up my truck tomorrow morning. Just had 4.56s and a detroit thrown into my rebuilt expo 8.8 rear end.

I get the jist of the break in procedure, easy on the skinny pedal, let it cool off every 20 miles or something. No problem there since I work only 10 miles away. Change oil after 500 miles.

Does a locker change any of this? How do I know when they're really broken in? When can I finally let the mud fly?

I don't want to see over $1200 exploding behind my truck.

locker doesnt change anything. When I say let it cool, I mean let it completely cool down, as in an hour or 2 between spurts of driving. The heat cycles built up during break in serve to almost temper them. So, take it easy, drive 10-20 miles, and let it cool down. Repeat.

So in other words, just drive it to and from work(10 miles one way, 20 per day) until I reach the 500 miles mark?

I don't know about the mud-slingin gears.......i broke my street gears in & have put another 1,000 miles on them without trying to burn the tires down....don't rush it if you don't have to......

I just got them up to operating temp on the first drive and let them cool completely. After that I just drove it like normal. Only thing I just didnt drive the hell out of it till after about 500 miles and a fluid change

The place did a good job. No noises. It makes me wonder if they put in the detroit locker cause its quiet around turns but it scared the crap outta me when I turned into my parking space and parked it...got out looked at the rear end through the wheel well and it rolled forward and it clicked a couple times and locked back up.

My break in procedure in my Mustang (track only car) was:
(When I installed the 3.73s)
1) Back out of shop slowly.
2) Rev engine to 5000 RPM.
3) Dump clutch and powershift 2nd.

(When I installed the 4.10s and spool)
1) back out of shop
2) pull onto trailer.
3) back off trailer.
4) drive to staging lanes.
5) stage car at 3800 RPM on the transbrake.
6) release button and hope it holds together.

I dont recommend either of my break in procedures to anyone!
