I have a 2003 Ford Ranger XL 3.0 standard cab that was used as a work truck by the City of San Diego, where they left the small radio antenna and GPS puck on the roof, had a strange PVC hole in fender panel behind the driver's door (to hold a caution flag?), a light bar on the roof with a switch inside (removed before purchase in lieu of a bed liner), and some paint removed on the front of the hood from the vehicle ID numbers that they tore off.
I bought it from someone who nabbed it at a city auction, immediately had the transmission fluid and filter serviced, and it drove just fine for a few years until a series of problems ensued. The wildest one was finding out Ford chose to put FIVE catalytic converters on this vehicle, apparently as some sort of perverse bad and failed idea.
I made a post about this with a poll.
I also own a 2003 Ford Excursion Limited 6.8 V10 I bought new, which now has rods knocking at only 89k miles, so it's parked until it can get a new engine.
