I snapped a bolt off on one of the staps connecting the front driveshaft/u-joint to the front axle on my 87 4x4 ext cab. I'd like to remove the yoke from the axle so I can drill out the snapped bolt. How should I go about it? What tools do I need? Is this backyard mechanic possible?

I just did the same thing when swapping out my leaf springs. Had to go out and buy an angle grinder and new bolts. It actually made it easier to just hack them off rather than fight it.

if you choose to pull the yolk off, you would need to re-set up the pinion bearing preload on the diff so you would need to almost fully disassemble the diff and if you've never dont that before then you would need to take it to a professional. You should look into e-z outs or screw extractors and try as much as possible to not remove the yolk.

I changed the seal in mine and just took off the nut and pulled it off.Put a new seal in while you have it apart.Check the torque when you put it back on.

Check the torque when taking it off also. Use a beam type torque wrench then torque it back on to the same lbs. But I've used an impact with no bad results, probably lucky though.
