Smoke from steering

99 2.5 2wd 5spd.....Smoke came from steering column upon start up the other day. No other issues since though the key/cylinder sticks. I have heard there are issues with the hazard flasher and multi function switches. Since I need a to replace the clock sprin, I will be removing the steering wheel and shroud to fully inspect things...Any info would be appreciated. Just gave the truck to my son and safety is a high priority. I bought the truck with 46k and it now has 265k. It has been a workhorse and has never before had any weird sh/t like this happen before...

its just protesting new ownership..

key cyl clean with brake cleaner and lube with either teflon or silicone based lube. check wiring for frays. probably just the multi function sw though...

Ty demon....the new owner is trying to make a friend lol...all wiring looks clean. We will put in a MF switch and clean/lube the cylinder
