smog?

I wouldn't think you'd need one.

The muffler is purely a sound control device and serves no purpose to control or treat the tailpipe emissions. Your local laws may still require you to have one, but if so, a glass pack should be acceptable as long as it is rated as street-legal in your state.

thats what i thought but, what about the total length of the exhaust pipe? does this effect the emissions?

Nope. Only thing that really effects it is the temp of the catalyst. The converter works most efficiently above 400*F.

off topic- did you get the new ranger?

YES!!! and i love it! she is nice and clean with a 5r55e auto 5 gear tranny. but she needs a muffler. i got under her expecting to see a flowmaster and was like WTF? when i saw the exhaust pipe just ended right where the muffler was supposed to be

hmmm ima prolly have to smog her cause she came from arizona and im in cali. and when you smog a veichal they let it sit and cool off before they smog test it  hope it passes its a '97 with the converter still there so it should. ill prolly put the glasspack on first though

Pour some kerosene into the glass pack before you put it on and then run the piss out of it on the highway before you get it tested. It burns the fiberglass out and makes it resonate a bit deeper. I think it sounds better than a regular pack.

Actually in California you DO have to have an exhaust system behind the cat. If it's too loud they may say something. I think it's 2012 when the technician can say it's too loud. It's better to have on than not and if it's open under the cab it may fail just for that. You are allowed (at this time) to do pretty much anything so long as the cat isn't touched. Why don't you just ask a smog tech?

im pretty sure the exhaust must terminate outside the perimeter of the vehicle, muffler or not

wow ok thanks ill have to cut the pipe a lil put the glass pack on and get some pipe to make it end before the rear tire. i ordered the muffler today from summit and it only cost me 21 bux with shipping!!!
